Thanks for your comment Colin and really good question. I always suggest starting out with the 50mm f1.8 but as you already experienced it might be sometimes too close. You can either get a 35mm f2.0 (http://amzn.to/2kjjB21) but it´s not that cheap. I wanted to suggest a 17-55mm f/2.8 for your crop sensor camera. The Canon version is rather expensive (http://amzn.to/2A1nD6i). I haven’t used the Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 (http://amzn.to/2ApTo87), but it seems it got great reviews. If you have the budget I would go with this one, since it’s more versatile than a fixed lens.

Regarding the aperture. F2.8 will work in low light situations. Just crank up your ISO on your 80D (ISO 6400 shouldn´t be a problem). Hope that helps and let me know if you have any other quesitons

I wanted to ask your advice on my next lens purchase…I have a Canon 80D (crop sensor) with kit lens (18-55, F3.5) which has gotten me through a few concerts but am definitely in need of a lens better suited for low light conditions.

I rented a 50mm (f/1.4 or 2.8 – can’t remember) lens for a past concert but felt it was a bit too close to the artist, given the 80D is crop sensor, and I wasn’t able to get a broader shot of the artist and band. I feel, that maybe I should be looking at a 35mm lens for my camera?

I found a Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 on Amazon for $370. I like having the zoom option to get drummer in the back or head shots of the artists but still be able to capture a broader photo. Finally, for my question…do you feel f/2.8 will be sufficient in many low-light club conditions? Or, am I better off buying the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 for $125 and loose the zoom capability.

Hoping to get your thoughts, thank you!!

Hi Kin, please read the end of the article where I explain how they interact. The effect depends on your setting. Small Aperture number -> BOKEH, out of focus background. High SO settings -> “noise” in the photo

Yes Kin, it´s the same principle working for every camera

Thanks for your comment Cody and great to hear that my article was of help. I don´t use Auto-ISO and always dial it in manually. If the club has poor lighting than ISO 200 is definitely too less. I would rather guess it´ll be about 1600 to 3200, which is no problem for the D750. However there is no problem if you try Auto ISO the camera will handle it for you. Hope that helps and let me how it worked out
